The Japan Reader app was developed to aid individuals looking to enhance their Japanese reading skills or navigate life in Japan more effectively. The app aims to provide users with on-demand assistance for learning new vocabulary and enhancing their reading speed.

Users can import images of newspapers, magazines, textbooks, or other printed materials using a smartphone camera or scanner. Once the images are in the device, they can be added to the Japan Reader library for easy access.

• While reading a text page and encountering unfamiliar words, users can tap on the word to reveal furigana (phonetic readings) and definitions. A list of collected words is generated for future review and practice.
• The app supports over 70 languages, offering dictionary definitions in multiple languages such as Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, English, Korean, French, and German.
• Utilizing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, the app analyzes print text to identify furigana and display definitions.
• Words encountered during reading are automatically compiled into a word list. Words are added to the list when users touch a word on the page to access its furigana or definition.
• Users can practice vocabulary in context through drills that challenge memory retention within the original text. Additional drills allow users to enhance memory recall utilizing kanji cues, readings, or definitions.
